Listen, this curly life has seriously turned me into a product junkie and these are just a few of the goodies that I have to keep in stock or with me when I'm traveling (when we are actually allowed to travel again). Now, before I drop these gems, I'll mention that each photo will take you to the actual product or my Amazon store where these items + many more can be found. Enjoy and don't kill me because everything is easily 'add to cartable'.
1. Derria's Closet Hair Sleeve
If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I love my hair sleeves. I have 8 of them and my daughter and I wear them ALL OF THE TIME! If I'm doing my makeup, I'm wearing a sleeve. If I'm cleaning the house, I've got a designated hair sleeve for that. Lastly, when I am ready to lay it down for some beauty rest, my sleeve is most definitely on. My Derria's Closet Hair Sleeve is made of nylon/spandex with the perfect about of length to pineapple my hair and versatile to the point where I can scrunch it up and use it as a headband. I will say that these hair sleeves are extremely popular and sell out QUICKLY so if you visit the site and see that they are 'sold out' be sure to add your name to Derria's mailing list to be notified of restock dates. Lastly, shop confidently knowing you'll be supporting an amazing black business. Friendly Tip: I may or may not be a wild sleeper and I like to secure the corners of my hair sleeve with two bobby pins.
2. Mommy & Me Satin Bonnet
If you're just starting your natural [curly] journey or if you're an OG to the curly, kink, and coil life, there is one tip that gets thrown at you regardless of the phase you are in and that's the benefits of satin. Sleeping on cotton pillowcases can cause friction and increase frizz so if you're not a fan of satin pillowcases, this is the next best thing. Not only does it help protect your shape/style but it helps retain the moisture in your hair. So by now, you're probably asking, "Vil, do you sleep with a sleeve and a bonnet?" Short answer...yes. I'm pretty sure I run marathons in my sleep because my bonnet sometimes ends up on the floor or in my sheets and my sleeve is there for backup. To Purchase: I contacted Shirelle to put in a custom order for our pineapple Mommy & Me bonnets but she has a ton of styles to choose from on her Instagram and black-owned Etsy Store.
3. Deep Conditioning Cap
This cordless deep conditioning cap is a must for when we Mia and I are doing our weekly treatments. After adding the mask or deep conditioner (yes there is a difference) to our hair, I seal it with a plastic shower cap and then put the conditioning cap in the microwave for 90 seconds before adding it. I typically let it sit in our hair anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes. Why am I adding heat, you ask? You see, in its natural form, hair cuticles are closed. This means that any product added just sits on top of the hair. Adding heat when deep conditioning allows the hair cuticle to open up which allows the deep conditioner to really penetrate the hair shaft and provide nourishment from the inside out. When rinsing out your treatment, be sure to use cool water so you seal the moisture in your hair. Doing this on a weekly basis will retain moisture, prevent damage, enhance shine, protects color-treated hair, and packs it with moisture for when you are preparing to straighten your curls.
4. Olaplex No.3
Before the COVID shutdown happened I went to my favorite curly salon, The Heir Salon, and went blonde in preparation for all the fun that comes with spring and summer (that also never happened 😭). After 5 years of rockin' my naturally black hair, I went all-in with color and although blonde is fun, it comes with a little work. Olaplex No.3 is not a shampoo or a conditioner. It is a bond builder that reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair, improving its look and feel. The instructions say to use it 2-3 times a week but I prefer to only use it twice a month on my color-treated hair or when I notice that my ends are frizzy and not a fully "bonded" curl. It is silicone-free and the only Olaplex item that I've chosen to incorporate in my #CurlyWashDay routine.
5. Dyson Hair Dryer & Diffuser
My mixture of 3a and 3b hair LOVES and NEEDS to be diffused. I've tried the wash-n-go look and it doesn't give my curls the definition that I love and know from them. For that reason alone, I need to have a reliable diffuser around. I've had the Dyson Hair Supersonic Hair Dryer since December 2019 and, for me, it's worth every single penny. Emphasis on the 'for me'. Prior to receiving this majestic unicorn, my diffusing time would take 45-60+ minutes and it has dropped to 10-15 minutes with little to no frizz! This is an automatic win for me and I no longer dread drying my hair. Now, I completely understand that dropping $399 on a styling tool is not for everyone which is why I've provided the diffusers that I used prior to Santa Husband Bae's gift. I do still have the other diffusers (DevaCurl & Black Orchid) because they travel well and attach to almost every hair dryer found in hotels.
6. Hair Cutting Shears
First of all, these are super cute! Secondly, I would like to tell you that I stick to the every 6 weeks haircut/trim schedule my Curl Dr recommends but that means I'd be lying to you. I don't. Frankly, it's because I get busy with the family, weddings or because A WHOLE PANDEMIC HIT! Sorry...I was triggered 😩 Remember when I mentioned dying my hair right before lockdown? Well, it was not time for my hair to be trimmed so I spent February - May looking at a few split ends until I bought these babies. Now, I'll do a little snip here and a little snip there until I can make it back to the salon but no bangs or drastic cuts will be happening around here.
7. TGIN Honey Miracle Mask
I'll admit that I am a product junkie when it comes to hair masks and deep conditioners BUT what I will say is that I always come back to my TGIN Honey Miracle Mask. If you didn't know, honey is a humectant and with my curly, color-treated hair, I am constantly trying to find ways to moisturize my hair. Honey helps replenish moisture that is lost and also helps to fuse vitamins and minerals into our hair strands, keeping hair healthy and strong. This also helps pack on the shine when I've gone too many days in between #CurlyWashDay
8. Goody's Ouchless Forever
This is the only hair tie that I buy in multiples yet, I can't seem to locate more than 2 or 3 at a time. I do like to keep one on me at all times just in case I need to throw mine or Mia's curls in a quick top knot. These have great stretch for thick hair and do not break our hair off. I do like to add a few drops of my Mane Choice Growth Serum to the hair tie prior to using it for a quick updo or protective hairstyle.
9. The Mane Choice -
Tropical Moringa Line
This was the first line I started using once I decided to leave the straight hair alone to join my daughter in this kick-ass curly life. It was the line my hairstylist used during my first appointment and the one she recommended purchasing. I purchased every single item because I was adamant about following all of her instructions if it meant getting my curls back. The reason why I' decided to add a picture of the ENTIRE line is simply because I truly do love each product and I could not choose just one item out of the collection. This isn't blogger fluff and no one paid me to write that...I'm serious! Not only has this line been instrumental in transforming my heat damaged hair to healthy bouncy curls, but it has also done wonders for Mia's hair when it comes to moisture retention and the overall health of her curls. Now, you know I'm always honest and transparent with my people...sometimes it is hella hard to find all of these products in one place. I have found the leave-in at CVS, the shampoo at Sally's Beauty Supplies and sometimes I can get lucky and find everything on the actual The Mane Choice website.
10. Denman Brush - 7 Rows
This is a curly community staple item to have. In my house, we keep this on deck for 2 reasons. Detangling. Product distribution. Mia has a mixture of 3 and 4 curls which means that sometimes I'm in for some work with detangling if she goes to bed without a bonnet or hair sleeve. Many curlies rave about the way a Denman can cut down their detangling time, and how it also works to evenly distribute product in curly hair. This holds true for us and it's the reason why we own several of them. The last thing I need on #CurlyWashDay is to not be able to find this brush prior to detangling or brushing our favorite products in for optimal curl definition.
